Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat -
The story begins in present time, with an inspiring
teacher who captures the hearts and minds of her
students through the Biblical tale of Joseph. As the teacher begins
her tale, the
characters come to life right before our eyes and
her students (a children's chorus) become literally caught up in
the action of
the story. The play introduces us to a rambunctious
and energetic group of brothers (11 in all) who must face their
jealousy of their
father, Jacob, and his love for Joseph. Their feelings
are fully revealed when Joseph receives a coat of many colors from
his father
- the brothers sell him as a slave in retaliation.
The teacher then follows the story of the journeys of Joseph and his brothers. Joseph travels to Egypt where he meets a myriad of colorful characters. He goes from being a slave in a rich mogul's house to a jail cell before finally ending up as the right-hand man to the Pharaoh (who looks and sounds surprisingly like Elvis). The brothers don't fare as well. Although at first they celebrate the absence of their brother Joseph, they eventually are faced with a famine that threatens to destroy their family. They travel to Egypt where they ask the Pharaoh's man for food and assistance (not realizing they are talking to their own brother Joseph).
With music that includes styles of calypso, rock and roll, ballad, counry, and pop, this musical has something for everyone in your family. Add a children's chorus and a different guest dignitary playing Jacob every night, and you will want to see this show again and again this summer.
